The Alumni Band had its humble beginnings in 1994 where a number of
old boys and girls came together and set up the a band specifically
for alumni. Its purpose was to meet the needs of the growing number
of alumni members of the Bands of the ACS family of schools. The
number of members then were relatively small for a wind band, thus
the name
The Anglo-Chinese Wind Ensemble (ACWE).
The Wind Ensemble was tasked with two main goals. First and foremost,
it is to give graduated members a chance to continue their love and
enjoyment for music through performing. In addition, it serves to develop a
strong sense of cohesion among the Old Boys and Girls of the band by
providing the opportunity for them to meet up regularly.
It was through the undaunting ACSian spirit and the enthusiasm of these
pioneer members that saw an inaugural concert held at the Victoria Concert
Hall on 1st April 94. This successful concert led a number of other
concerts spanning the next few years till today.
The governing authority of the Alumni Band lies with a committee formed from
the members, overseeing the planning and operations of the non-profit
organisation, often with advise from The ACS OBA.
As membership increased, the name - Anglo-Chinese Wind Ensemble, no longer
portrayed the proper role the Alumni Band, and thus a concensus was reached
to have the name changed to Anglo-Chinese Wind Orchestra. This brought about
the start of changes and improvements in the way the alumni band operated.
A reorganisation was in order, which saw more involvement of the younger
generation. This is especially true for the graduating batch of 1997. This
year, in line with the ACS family of schools, the Anglo-Chinese Wind Orchestra
will henceforth be known as the ACS Wind Orchestra.
In the forthcoming years, the ACSWO seeks to establish ties with all who have
made the ACS bands the premier bands in Singapore today, and provide a niche
for those who wish to continue with this love and interest.
